Após séculos de imperialismo nos quais portos foram tomados e, lentamente, por meio de missões religiosas católicas, os colonizadores foram avançando para o interior até que a dominação total pôde ser estabelecida — em tempos nos quais os europeus partilhavam a África e a Ásia de forma obstinada, cruel e racista.

Em 1912, a escravidão já havia terminado, mas o Brasil testemunha a exclusão quase total da população negra, a ausência de direitos trabalhistas, a decadência silenciosa da República Velha e uma vida intensa. Com seus portos movimentados, o Brasil recebe não apenas a cólera e outras epidemias, mas viajantes e expatriados do mundo inteiro, trazendo novas ideias, cores e sons do país que teima, apesar de sua oligarquia, em se desenvolver.
Ho passa a trabalhar em um restaurante na Lapa enquanto mora em Santa Tereza e vai ao porto com frequência para tentar encontrar um navio no qual possa embarcar, encontrando o líder sindical pernambucano José Leandro da Silva, um cozinheiro negro que atua no porto e confronta autoridades racistas, que ainda aplicavam castigos da época da escravidão contra trabalhadores negros – havia dois anos que a Revolta da Chibata tinha estourado no mesmo porto do Rio de Janeiro, com marinheiros negros se rebelando contra oficiais brancos que os açoitavam.
A luta de José Leandro foi narrada mais tarde por Ho no artigo “Solidariedade Internacional” que ele escreve em 1921 – 9 anos após ter passado pelo Rio. No artigo, ele conta como José Leandro liderou uma greve no porto com 2 reivindicações: jornada de trabalho de 8 horas e salários iguais entre negros e brancos. Após jogar um policial no mar por não ter deixado ele entrar numa embarcação para agitar os trabalhadores, José Leandro foi cercado por 10 policiais e levou 11 tiros, segundo o artigo de Ho. Na ambulância, mesmo baleado, ele cantou a Internacional comunista. Mais tarde as autoridades policias tentaram incriminar José Leandro por um inocente morto no tiroteio, mas um movimento de solidariedade articulado por trabalhadores e advogados pressionou a corte para absolver o sindicalista. Por fim, José Leandro conquistou a liberdade.
Impressionado pelas belezas naturais do Rio, sua vida boêmia, Ho ficou assustado com cenário de degradação social e efervescência trabalhista, onde uma espécie de capitalismo periférico se cruzava com um passado escravagista bastante recente e o socialismo adentrava aos portos junto com as novidades, inspirando um pujante movimento sindical. Embora inspiradora, a passagem de Ho é curta, ele se recupera e consegue um navio que o conduz a Boston nos Estados Unidos em setembro ou outubro de 1912. A passagem pelo Rio, inclusive, inspirou o documentário ficcional o Rio de Ho Chi Minh. Só depois, Ho finalmente se estabelece em Paris, onde se uniu ao Partido Comunista Francês. Após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, ele segue para a União Soviética e de lá inicia sua trajetória para retornar ao Vietnã e travar a luta anti-imperialista pela independência do país.

A transformação de Nguyễn Sinh Cung em Ho Chi Minh – “aquele que ilumina” – não ocorreu de repente, nem foi um processo meramente pessoal: ela foi parte da própria transformação do jovem Ho e a luta revolucionária que também libertou o Vietnã moderno. Ho criou o Vietnã, mas o Vietnã criou Ho antes. E se havia algum lado bom de ter nascido em meio ao flagelo colonial, era ter acesso ao mundo pelas rotas de navegação.
Figura icônica, Ho lutou e venceu os imperialismos de França, Japão e Estados Unidos, deixando as sementes que permitiriam seu povo garantir a autonomia face aos chineses no fim dos anos 1970, quando resistiu e derrotou o regime bárbaro do Camboja, o Khmer Vermelho.
Enquanto os direitos civis da população negra nos Estados Unidos tinham acabado de ser conquistados à base de muita luta, a classe trabalhadora norte-americana se levantava contra o fato de seus filhos serem mandados para matar e morrer do outro lado do mundo – em uma guerra neocolonial que, como toda guerra colonial, serve apenas e tão somente aos poderosos do país imperialista.
Ironicamente, durante a Segunda Grande Guerra Mundial, Ho enfrentou os japoneses que ocuparam a Indochina, tomando-a da França, sendo, em tese, aliado de ambos. Os guerrilheiros comunistas faziam parte dos Aliados, mas qual surpresa não foi descobrir que após a derrota do inimigo japonês, os vencedores da guerra pretendiam restaurar a ordem colonial em outros termos.
O legado de luta de Ho nos ensina que a revolução é, necessariamente, internacionalista, e que o internacionalismo não nega nem a necessidade de autonomia nacional nem pode ser insensível aos perigos do imperialismo. É preciso sempre se lembrar que o Vietnã libertado, após ter recebido mais bombas que as forças do Eixo na Segunda Guerra Mundial, era a verdadeira imagem da “terra arrasada” e hoje o país é uma economia pujante e modelo global de combate à pandemia de Covid-19. Embora certamente falte muito trabalho para construir um socialismo efetivo, a experiência dos vietcongs, nas condições absolutamente adversas que tiveram de encarar, não pode jamais ser menosprezada e deve ser sempre lembrada que a vitória socialista não é uma questão utópica.
