Hoje, há 41 anos, Oscar Romero, o arcebispo católico de El Salvador, foi assassinado enquanto celebrava uma missa em uma conspiração arquitetada e executada por forças de extrema direita apoiadas pelos Estados Unidos.
Apesar da crescente onda de violência e repressão perpetrada por essas forças em seu país, a maior parte da vida de Romero como padre foi apolítica. Em um momento em que grande parte da liderança católica e leigos estavam sendo radicalizados e se juntando à luta contra a miserável desigualdade orquestrada pelas elites governantes militares salvadorenhos, a hierarquia da igreja conservadora o escolheu como arcebispo porque ele não tinha histórico de ativismo político ou opiniões políticas visíveis.
Mas quando um amigo próximo e companheiro do padre, Rutilio Grande, foi assassinado pela direita em 1977 por se organizar com os pobres, Romero mudou. Ele começou a usar sua posição para se manifestar contra o regime dominante e seus principais apoiadores, os Estados Unidos. Essa defesa levou ao seu assassinato apenas três anos depois.
Na véspera de seu assassinato, Romero fez seu discruso mais famosa na catedral nacional de San Salvador, transmitida por rádio para todo o país, na qual falou diretamente aos soldados do país:
Gostaria de fazer um apelo especial aos homens do exército e, em particular, às tropas da Guarda Nacional, à polícia, às guarnições.
Irmãos, vocês são parte de nosso próprio povo. Você mata seus próprios irmãos camponeses. Diante de uma ordem dada por um homem, a lei de Deus que diz “não matarás” deve prevalecer.
Nenhum soldado é obrigado a obedecer a uma ordem contrária à lei de Deus. Ninguém precisa cumprir uma lei imoral.
Chegou a hora de você recuperar sua consciência e obedecer aos seus ditames, em vez da ordem do pecado. A Igreja, defensora dos direitos de Deus, da lei de Deus, da dignidade humana, da dignidade pessoal, não pode calar-se perante tal abominação. Queremos que o governo leve a sério que suas reformas não significam nada se vierem banhadas em tanto sangue.

Como a morte de Romero ocorreu no momento em que a guerra civil salvadorenha estava começando, e El Salvador continuou a ser governado por um regime de extrema direita que tinha pouco interesse em expor a verdade sobre sua morte até 2009, ninguém foi responsabilizado pelo assassinato até um grupo de direitos humanos com sede nos Estados Unidos, o Center for Justice and Accountability, começar a montar um processo contra os homens responsáveis pelo assassinato.
