Em algum momento nos próximos meses, a crise vai terminar, e, então, poderemos voltar a nossos empregos “não essenciais”. Para muitos, será como o despertar de um sonho.
A mídia e as classes políticas certamente nos encorajarão a pensar assim. Foi isso que aconteceu após a crise financeira de 2008. Houve um breve momento de questionamento. (O que são “finanças”, afinal? Não são só as dívidas dos outros? O que é dinheiro? É só dívida também? O que é dívida? Não é só uma promessa? Se dinheiro e dívida não passam de promessas que as pessoas fazem umas às outras, não podemos simplesmente fazer promessas diferentes, então?) Essa janela de oportunidade foi fechada quase que instantaneamente por aqueles que insistiram para que nos calássemos, parássemos de pensar e voltássemos ao trabalho, ou pelo menos começássemos a procurar um emprego.
Daquela vez, a maioria de nós caiu nessa conversa. Agora, é fundamental que não façamos isso porque, na verdade, a crise pela qual estamos passando é que foi o despertar de um sonho, um confronto com a realidade da vida humana; a realidade de que somos um bando de seres frágeis cuidando uns dos outros, e de que aqueles que fazem a maior parte do trabalho de cuidado e saúde que nos mantém vivos estão sobrecarregados, mal pagos e humilhados diariamente; a realidade de que uma vasta proporção da população só inventa fantasias e procura maximizar lucros, atrapalhando, em geral, os que põem a mão na massa ou que atendem às necessidades de outros seres vivos.
É absolutamente necessário que não voltemos a uma realidade onde tudo isso faz algum tipo de sentido inexplicável, como o que acontece nos sonhos.
Por que não paramos de considerar normal o fato de uma pessoa ganhar menos quanto mais seu trabalho beneficia as outras? Por que não paramos de insistir que os mercados financeiros são a melhor forma de direcionar o investimento de longo prazo, quando são eles que estão nos levando a destruir a maior parte da vida na Terra?
Em vez disso, quando a pandemia terminar, proponho que nos lembremos das lições que aprendemos: se o termo “economia” significa alguma coisa, é a maneira como provemos uns aos outros o que necessitamos para viver (em todos os sentidos da palavra). E o que chamamos de “mercado” é, em grande parte, apenas uma forma de organizar os desejos combinados dos ricos – em sua maioria ligeiramente patológicos, para dizer o mínimo.
Os mais poderosos deles já estavam acabando de projetar os bunkers para onde pretendem escapar se continuarmos sendo tolos o suficiente para acreditar no que nos dizem seus minions – que, por sermos tão desprovidos do mais elementar bom senso, não podemos fazer nada a respeito das catástrofes iminentes.
Desta vez, podemos, por favor, ignorá-los?
A maior parte do trabalho que fazemos hoje só existe no campo dos sonhos; existe por existir, para que os ricos se sintam bem consigo mesmos, ou para que os pobres se sintam mal consigo mesmos. Se simplesmente parássemos, talvez pudéssemos fazer promessas muito mais razoáveis, como, por exemplo, criar uma “economia” que nos permita cuidar das pessoas que estão cuidando de nós.
