“Além do desejo de produzir coisas bonitas”, declarou William Morris em seu ensaio de 1894 “How I Became a Socialist”, “a principal paixão em minha vida tem sido e é o ódio à civilização moderna”.

Na realidade, porém, o socialismo de Morris era rigoroso, revolucionário e totalmente engajado nas questões de sua época.

Felizmente, as ideias socialistas de Morris nunca estiveram tão acessíveis, em parte graças à publicação de um novo volume de seus escritos políticos. Tomando emprestado o título do ensaio acima mencionado, How I Became a Socialist contém dezessete conferências, ensaios e artigos de Morris organizados em ordem cronológica do início da década de 1880 a 1896, o ano de sua morte.
Além de oferecer aos leitores uma ampla seleção das atividades socialistas de Morris, o volume, que faz parte da série “Revolutions” da Verso, inclui notas detalhadas de Owen Holland e introduções substanciais de Holland e Owen Hatherley que elucidam o contexto e o legado de Morris.
Arte e sociedade
Para o leitor mão familiarizado com os escritos políticos de Morris – ou o leitor cujo interesse por Morris está enraizado principalmente em sua arte e design – o melhor lugar para começar é o ensaio do título, que Morris produziu para o jornal Justice em 1894. Esse tema é desenvolvido no primeiro ensaio da coleção, “Art Under Plutocracy”, que Morris proferiu como uma palestra em Oxford em 1883. Aqui, Morris distingue entre as artes decorativas e intelectuais, e lamenta que as primeiras tenham perdido seu vigor, deixando apenas as últimas como um vestígio reificado de uma cultura artística popular outrora próspera. Morris defende uma definição mais ampla de arte em que seu significado seja estendido
além daquelas questões que são conscientemente obras de arte, para incluir não apenas pintura e escultura e arquitetura, mas as formas e cores de todos os utensílios domésticos, ou melhor, até mesmo o arranjo dos campos para cultivo e pastagem, o gerenciamento de cidades e de nossas rodovias de todos os tipos; em uma palavra, estender-se ao aspecto externo de nossa vida.
“Arte”, de acordo com a visão que Morris herdou de Ruskin, “é a expressão do homem de sua alegria no trabalho”. Segue-se desta definição que uma sociedade não artística é aquela em que o trabalho foi privado de suas qualidades alegres e artísticas: “Agora, a principal acusação que devo fazer contra o estado moderno da sociedade é que ela se baseia na falta de arte ou trabalho infeliz da maior parte dos homens.”
Na opinião de Morris, o problema da sociedade moderna não é apenas uma falta de beleza e realização estética, mas um desprezo fundamental pelas condições de trabalho da grande maioria: “Toda essa degradação externa da face do país de que falei é odiosa para mim, não apenas porque é uma causa de infelicidade para alguns de nós que ainda amamos a arte, mas também e principalmente porque é um símbolo da vida infeliz imposta à grande massa da população pelo sistema de comércio competitivo.”
Pode-se concluir de todas as suas injúrias contra a feiura da sociedade moderna que Morris atribui o declínio da arte ao advento da produção em massa pela maquinaria. Tomando emprestada a linguagem de Walter Benjamin – a quem Hatherley alude em seu ensaio introdutório -, talvez Morris lamente que a aura da obra de arte murche na era da reprodução mecânica.
Mas Morris introduz essa possibilidade apenas para rejeitá-la: “O que causou a doença? Trabalho mecânico, você diria? Bem, eu vi uma passagem citada de um dos antigos poetas sicilianos regozijando-se na construção de um moinho de água e exultando com o trabalho sendo libertado da labuta do moinho manual como conseqüência; e isso certamente seria um tipo de esperança natural do homem ao prever a invenção de máquinas que economizam trabalho.” (Como Holland observa em suas notas finais meticulosas e informativas, Morris provavelmente aprendeu essa passagem com Marx.)
Semelhante ao abraço de Benjamin da reprodução mecânica como potencialmente democratizante, Morris abraça a capacidade da máquina de criar mais tempo de lazer para as pessoas cultivarem a si mesmas e seus talentos. Mas assim como Benjamin adverte que, na ausência de ação política, a reprodução mecânica acabará servindo ao fascismo, Morris também enfatiza que o uso de máquinas é, em última análise, uma questão político-econômica.
Como ele escreve em outro dos ensaios mais gratificantes do volume, “Como vivemos e como podemos viver” (proferido pela primeira vez como uma palestra em 1884 na filial de Hammersmith da Federação Social-democrata).
No momento, você deve notar que todas as máquinas incríveis que inventamos serviram apenas para aumentar a quantidade de mercadorias que geram lucro; em outras palavras, para aumentar a quantidade de lucro alocada pelos indivíduos para seu próprio benefício, parte do qual eles usam como capital para a produção de mais lucro, com sempre o mesmo desperdício ligado a ele; e parte como riquezas privadas ou meios para uma vida luxuosa, o que novamente é puro desperdício. Como ele resume a questão em outro lugar: “Não é desta ou daquela máquina tangível de aço e latão que queremos nos livrar, mas a grande máquina intangível da tirania comercial, que oprime a vida de todos nós.”
“Como podemos viver”
Lendo os textos de Morris hoje, ficamos imediatamente impressionados com seu internacionalismo resoluto. Morris dedicou suas energias à Liga Socialista e, junto com Eleanor Marx, a filha mais nova de Karl, Morris ajudou a conduzir a organização ao internacionalismo, um princípio articulado em seu manifesto, que apareceu na primeira edição do Commonweal, o órgão de impressa da Liga, em 1885:
Para nós, nem as fronteiras geográficas, a história política, a raça ou o credo fazem rivais ou inimigos; para nós não existem nações, mas apenas massas variadas de operários e amigos, cujas simpatias mútuas são reprimidas ou pervertidas por grupos de senhores e despojadores cujo interesse é incitar rivalidades e ódios entre os moradores de diferentes terras.
O internacionalismo de Morris é abundante em artigos como “Como vivemos e como podemos viver”, em que ele declara que “nosso sistema atual de sociedade é baseado em um estado de guerra perpétua”:
Como as nações sob o sistema atual são levadas a competir umas com as outras pelos mercados do mundo, e como as empresas ou os capitães da indústria têm que lutar por sua parte dos lucros nos mercados, os trabalhadores também precisam competir com outros – para subsistência; e é essa competição ou guerra constante entre eles que permite aos garimpeiros obterem seus lucros e, por meio da riqueza assim adquirida, tomar todo o poder executivo do país em suas mãos.
Rivalidades raciais e nacionalistas servem apenas para impedir a unidade da classe trabalhadora, na visão de Morris, distraindo do principal antagonismo entre capital e trabalho. Este ponto é especialmente claro em seus escritos sobre os movimentos irlandeses e italianos pela independência nacional, “Irlanda e Itália: Um Aviso”.
“De minha parte”, escreve Morris, “não acredito no ódio racial dos irlandeses contra os ingleses: eles odeiam seus mestres ingleses, como podem; e seus mestres ingleses estão agora se esforçando para estimular o ódio racial entre seus irmãos ingleses, os trabalhadores, atravé de toda essa conversa-fiada sobre a integridade do Império e assim por diante.”
Ele conclui com o conselho geral: “Suas lutas revolucionárias serão abortivas ou levarão à mera decepção, a menos que você aceite como sua palavra de ordem, TRABALHADORES DE TODOS OS PAÍSES, UNI-VOS!
Ambientalista vitoriano
Morris também foi um observador presciente da destrutividade ecológica do capitalismo. Embora as seleções contidas neste volume não esgotem os escritos de Morris sobre beleza natural (Holland menciona as palestras adicionais “Arte e a Beleza da Terra” e “Sob um Olmo; ou Pensamentos no Campo” em sua introdução), o leitor no entanto, encontrará a profunda consciência ambiental de Morris neste volume.
Nascido no alvorecer da era da Capital Fóssil, Morris estava entre um grupo de autores e artistas radicais vitorianos que chamaram a atenção para a degradação ambiental do capitalismo industrial. Em “Whigs, Democrats and Socialists”, ele adverte que, embora seja permitido aos socialistas entrar no parlamento com o propósito de interrompê-lo, eles devem resistir a serem seduzidos para os negócios do parlamento e promulgar medidas paliativas que só servem para perpetuar o domínio da classe capitalista por torná-la um pouco mais tolerável.
Esses ensaios podem impressionar o leitor contemporâneo como uma curiosidade histórica. Depois da experiência do fascismo, está claro que nosso reduzido movimento socialista não gerará a luta aberta triunfante que Morris antecipou. Embora uma classe dominante menos conciliatória possa tornar a natureza predatória do sistema mais palpável, não há garantias de que o ressentimento das massas assim gerado tomará a forma de socialismo.
Além disso, se os últimos anos são uma indicação, os socialistas têm mais influência quando fazemos da política eleitoral um terreno de luta do que quando nos retiramos para pequenos grupos que defendem intransigentemente a revolução extraparlamentar como o único caminho verdadeiro para o socialismo.
Mesmo em sua própria época, Morris não era imune ao que E. P. Thompson se refere na biografia de Morris como “purismo”. A atitude que os socialistas deveriam adotar em relação à política eleitoral era, de fato, uma questão controversa dentro da Liga Socialista, e Morris freqüentemente apoiava sua facção anti-parlamentar.

À luz da hegemonia do capitalismo global no século XXI e do descrédito das alternativas revolucionárias do século XX, tal ruptura repentina parece menos plausível para nós do que poderia ter parecido para Morris.
Uma transição para o socialismo parece provavelmente assumir uma forma diferente hoje – como a sugestão de Erik Olin Wright de erodir o capitalismo, minando o poder coercitivo do mercado de trabalho capitalista e erigindo “utopias reais” baseadas em instituições econômicas alternativas.
Quaisquer que sejam as críticas que alguém possa fazer de sua estratégia para o avanço do socialismo, a crítica de Morris ao capitalismo perdura por causa de seu intenso foco no trabalho alienado, que permanece uma fonte tão potente de destrutividade mental, física e ecológica hoje como era na época de Morris. Portanto, parece lógico buscar uma transformação radical do trabalho – reduzindo o trabalho obrigatório, tanto quanto possível, enquanto democratiza o que resta – como uma forma de levar seu legado adiante.
O que deve ser lembrado, no entanto, é que erodir o poder da classe capitalista para ditar os termos em que trabalhamos exigirá o tipo de ação coletiva e companheirismo heróico consistentemente defendido por Morris, porque as forças do conservadorismo, reação e propriedade não irão ceder um centímetro sem lutar.
