E eles não têm ninguém para culpar além de si mesmos.
Se tivessem levado Sanders e sua coalizão a sério, provavelmente já o teriam parado. Mas não o fizeram – eles simplesmente não podiam acreditar que um socialista velho com um sotaque regional engraçado poderia reunir milhões de pessoas por algumas causas fora do comum, como o Medicare for All e o pleno emprego, duas ex-pautas do suposto partido dos trabalhadores que, curiosamente, eles nunca conseguiram implementar.
E, pela primeira vez, talvez tenhamos de agradecer à Constituição dos EUA por essa reviravolta. Se vivêssemos sob um sistema de Westminster como é na Inglaterra, a equipe de Trump poderia muito bem ter visto Sanders assumir o cargo de líder oficial da oposição no Partido Democrata profundamente dividido em 2017, dando a nossa classe dominante anos para derrubá-lo, como fizeram com Jeremy Corbyn em o Reino Unido.
Felizmente, a arrogância de nossas elites os impediu de considerar a possibilidade de Sanders, apesar de ser detestado pelos políticos, já ser efetivamente o líder do Partido Democrata, determinado por seus eleitores que, ao contrário da elite do partido, sempre gostaram do cara. E agora faltam apenas alguns meses para a Convenção Nacional Democrática em Milwaukee, após a qual – se Sanders de fato ganhar a indicação – serão apenas mais alguns meses até a eleição geral.
Nossa classe dominante pode causar muitos danos nesse período, mas não tanto quanto eles poderiam ter feito nos últimos três anos. Eles não conseguiram encontrar um candidato forte suficientemente forte anti-Sanders. Na verdade, eles ainda estão procurando por um, se apaixonando por um novo político, apenas para descartá-lo na próxima esquina. E será a luta de nossas vidas, começando agora.
Perez e a campanha “Stop Bernie!” do Partido Democrata, são apenas a primeira linha de defesa da classe dominante norte-americana. Temos um longo caminho pela frente e não estamos nem perto da batalha final. Então, respire fundo. As coisas vão ficar muito mais feias em breve.
